David Lynch, the groundbreaking filmmaker celebrated for his distinct and unconventional storytelling, has died at the age of 78. His family confirmed his passing in a statement posted to Facebook, writing:
It is with deep regret that we, his family, announce the passing of the man and the artist, David Lynch. We would appreciate some privacy at this time. There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us. But, as he would say, ‘Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.’
It’s a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way.
Lynch was best known for his ability to push the boundaries of storytelling in both film and television. His eclectic body of work includes critically acclaimed films such as Eraserhead (1977), Blue Velvet (1986), and Mulholland Drive (2001). The latter recently earned a place at #8 on the prestigious Sight & Sound Top 10 Films of All Time list in 2022.
His television series Twin Peaks (1990–1991, 2017) helped influence the medium of television with its blend of mystery, melodrama, and surrealism.
Known for his exploration of the eerie and bizarre, Lynch was a director unafraid to delve into the darker corners of human existence. He received an honorary Academy Award in 2019 for his contributions to cinema.
