After initial reports by Deadline.com of Willow’s cancellation after Season 1, Willow developer, executive producer, and writer Jonathan Kasdan provided further details in a lengthy tweet explaining it’s less a cancellation and more a likely hiatus.
According to Kasdan, “A decision was made last week to release [the] main cast for other series opportunities that may arise for them in the coming year.”
Kasdan cites the difficult market for streaming networks as the likely reason for the slow down in the industry, and the pause on Willow, but emphasizes that Lucasfilm and Disney have supported Kasdan and the creative team with the development and writing of a Volume II for Willow. Volume II would follow where the first season leaves off.
Kasdan still holds out hope, citing the increasing amount of years between series such as Atlanta, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Party Down. Likewise he suggest a campaign to demand more Willow now may not be the best moment; however, long term enthusiasm and love for Willow will be meaningful long term.
