Would You Pay More for Better Seats at the Movies?

Would you pay more for premiere seating at the movies? AMC is certainly betting on it.

In a press release today, AMC announced that they would be introducing new price tiers based on seat location. They’ve broken down seat selections into 3 tiers: Value Sightline, Standard Sightline, and Preferred Sightline.

Value Sightline will be the seats on the front row and they’ll cost the least. Next will be Standard Sightline seats which will be above and presumably to the left and right of those. Preferred Sightline seats will be focused in the middle of the theatre.

Movie Theater audience in theater seats

AMC announced they’ve already rolled this out in some theatres and they’ll be in all AMC theatres by year end.

This could be seen as a last grasp effort to make money from cinemas, when they’ve continued to experience downturns in attendance (excluding Avatar 2 and a few other blockbuster releases.) Whether people will adjust to these changes, as they have with flights, or go even less to the movie theaters is yet to be seen.

It’s bad enough that people who have the money get preferential treatment everywhere else. At least leave something first come first serve, I say.
